2019 - Directed by Robert D. Krzykowski

Guilty. The guy who plays the young Calvin Barr brought us here.

Yes, that Aidan Turner fellow has that special something that can drag anyone in to see anything. From vampires to hobbits to overtly seductive captains, he's got you buying tickets and glued to screens on a daily basis. It's real powerful stuff!  Now, once again, Mr. Turner delivers the goods, bringing us into a totally cool world where Bigfoot roams the land, Adolph Hitler faces a final, and just punishment and an older gent like Sam Elliott can kick ass like nobody's business!

"The Man Who Killed Hitler and then The Bigfoot" is a mouthful of a movie title, but flat out true to it's words. It's not often that you can go to a movie and actually see what you were promised. But this time, you most certainly do.

​

Calvin Barr (played in present time by Sam Elliott and by Aidan Turner as his youthful past) is a man who has seen it all. Barr spends most of his time in the company of his extraordinary memories. In his youth he had parted with his family, found the true love of his life, and ultimately, became the man who assassinated Hitler....Yes, you read that right. This guy kills Hitler. Face to face with the sadistic Nazi dictator, Calvin Barr, in an undercover operation plotted by the government, faces all fear and stands up against one of the world's greatest evils and ends it right then and there.

Sounds like the stuff that heroes are made of, right? Well, present day Calvin Barr doesn't feel so much like a hero anymore. Barr has regrets and he has learned that life is more precious than some people know. So, when the government returns to request his services once again, this time to save the world from a deadly plague carried by none other than the mythical creature Bigfoot, Calvin, regrettably, must do the one thing he was born to do --- hunt the Bigfoot.

Without spoiling the rest of this film for new viewers, we won't tell you the rest of the story, but what we can tell you is there is quite an adventure ahead! Sam Elliott and Aidan Turner are both extremely interesting individuals to watch. 

​

Elliott is all heart with a rough and tough exterior. A true southern gentleman who has seen a lot of rock n' roll. He gives the character of Calvin Barr the soul that brings him to life. We can just read on his face what he has been through. Elliott's portrayal is excellent and is a sure-fire Oscar nomination for 2019!

​

Aidan Turner's young Calvin Barr is fresh faced, energetic and strongly passionate with a dash of shy loveliness that softens your heart. You can feel the electricity coming off of him as he marches towards his destination. An Irish actor who slips into the character (and voice) of an american hero with great ease. Aidan plays this role with determination and animation. He is an utter joy to lay your eyes upon...as usual. Oh, Mr. Turner, could you ever disappoint your audience? We think not.

If you can't get to one of the theatres that are playing this film, then rent it or buy it online. It is available on most digital platforms and will also be coming soon to dvd and blu-ray. And whether you enjoy these types of films or not, we have to advise you, it's a must see, because you don't want to be the only one who isn't talking about it.

2015 - Directed by Owen Egerton

Definitely not your family Christmas movie!

If you're looking for something just a bit different this holiday season, then Follow is the right movie for you...But just realize that when we say "different", we mean it. This film is not for those who are faint of heart. Not for those who get creeped out easily, or get queasy at the slightest hint of blood. No, not for you. This film is dark, with a hint of playfulness. A poke at the sick and twisted situations that some unfortunate people stumble into when they least expect it. What the heck, it's a holiday horror film, labeled a psychological thriller - and (sorry, not sorry) - we liked it!

​

Thanks to author / filmmaker Owen Egerton for putting together this maddening little film about a young man who receives a strange early Christmas gift from his devious girlfriend, then blacks out, only to wake the next morning to find a gun in his hand, his girlfriend dead and his life shattering to bits all around him. 

​

This strange story and it's intriguing characters are enough to keep you watching all the way until the end and the tiny bits of fun (such as the oddly talented, solo Christmas caroler on the front lawn) make you chuckle at the most inappropriate times. Actor Noah Segan (who plays main character Quinn) puts on a haunting performance with eyes full of innocence and secrets that keep you guessing the whole time. There is also a classic appearance by the lovable Happy Days actor Don Most, which is a pleasant surprise for sure!

​

For those out there who are interested in writing, directing and ultimately making your own film, you will have no trouble appreciating the art and imagination put to work here. You can almost sense the little sacrifices made, but never at the expense of the filmmaker's vision. Kudos! It is unquestionably the smaller, independent films that seem more creative these days, getting out onto our screens just in the nick of time before the big corporate machine can snatch them up and franchise them to death. Long live indie films!

So, just happening to stumble across this movie was a truly great find! A holiday movie for darker times, indeed. Absolutely recommending a viewing of Follow to most of you --- but probably not all of you. Merry Christmas!

2017 - Directed by Karen Moncrieff

Have you ever lost a loved one? Most likely we all have in one way or another. What would you do if your lost loved one returned home again - completely unchanged with time and ready to continue life again right where you left off?...It would be a dream come true for most. In The Keeping Hours, that is exactly what you are watching.

The Keeping Hours is a phenomenal piece of work. A story about a couple whose marriage falls apart after they lose their young son in a tragic car accident. You would think that such a film might be a good watch, but slightly predictable considering most dramas these days - but predictability is the last thing you will find here. 

​

This movie takes you on a realistic journey through a supernatural experience. It is not fully the heavily dramatic film that would be expected, but has more of a child-like storybook quality filled with simplicity, warmth and a bit of humor. Of course, it is after you have fallen in love with these characters and the perfect little situation they find themselves in, the film ultimately does give you the heavy drama you came for in the first place.

Lee Pace (The Hobbit Trilogy) plays 'Mark', an executive attorney with a haunted past. Years after the tragic death of his only son, time has left him hard and weary. Pace is absolutely mesmerizing to watch. He is a lovable, emotional wreck! You not only can see his character's decline, but you can feel it. Just being able to witness this man's cold exterior melt away to reveal the truth, makes you realize what a genuine hero is. The toughest battles to fight are the ones inside of yourself.

​

Actress Carrie Coon (Gone Girl) also offers a stellar performance as Elizabeth, a mother in denial - and little Sander Thomas (Splitting Up Together) as Jacob is absolutely magical! 

​

The Keeping Hours is a film you can watch again and again. It fills the soul with hope and love, all the while keeping you lurching forward to the edge of your seat just to see what will happen next! A++ 

​

Watch it the first time for the story - Watch it a second time just to soak up all that the brilliant Lee Pace has to offer!

2016 - Directed by Jason Lew

This movie is a winner. The Free World is a 2016 drama starring two fantastic actors Boyd Holbrook and Elisabeth Moss, whose brilliant emotional performances really shine and bring you right into their world.

The story is about a man recently released from prison for a crime he didn't commit, (Holbrook) and ends up on the run with a woman (Moss) who's suspected of killing her abusive husband.

This is a powerful film that takes its time to make you experience the real sensitivity, feeling and emotions of these two people who find each other under extreme and tragic circumstances. The melancholic score adds the perfect ambience and compliments the acting perfectly.

We totally recommend The Free World. It's a pure work of art.

2017 - Directed by Adam Wingard

So, we have to admit, this whole "Death Note" thing is really cool. 

As so many people must know by now, with all the intense promotion going on, that Netflix has finally released their version of 'Death Note', a now streaming film that derives from the original 'highly imaginative' Japanese Manga creation, as well as countless Japanese films and series of the same concept. 

Being introduced to this glorious film and idea 're-imagining' through Netflix has allowed us to follow the adventures of Light Turner with a un-biased opinion. We are thankful for that, considering all the controversy surrounding this new, Hollywood-ized version (which is understandable when remaking something that has been dearly loved for many years now) But without comparison, we have to say, we were thrilled with the whole thing!
Death Note from Netflix is brilliant and mind-busting. It draws you in from start to finish and makes you definitely crave for more.

In this Netflix version, Light Turner (Nat Wolff) is a high-school student from Seattle who comes across a supernatural book that simply drops from the sky right in front of him, titled "Death Note". Finding it intriguing, he keeps it for himself, later waking up Ryuk, the dark and menacing, nine-foot-tall Death God (voiced by Willem Dafoe) Ryuk explains the meaning behind the Death Note book (in a creepy, yet very conversational way - which we love!) -  sharing that this special book gives its user the ability to kill anyone whose name and face he knows - In short, write a name in the book and they die - Now of course, many might want to use this power for evil, but Light wants to save the world, adding only the names of those who make this planet an ugly place to live in. Sounds like a good idea, right? Well, you will just have to watch and see... 

The Death Note cast is pretty good, and the retro soundtrack is refreshingly unique, but let's face it, we have all come here for Ryuk - and we are not disappointed, to say the least. Ryuk is big, bold and horrifyingly beautiful! His casual conversations with Light make what seems to be an unimaginable nightmare, even worse! He is creepy as all hell and we love every minute of it! 

Kudos to Netflix for bringing this ultimately COOL concept to our attention. It has brought on a Death Note obsession that has now lead us back to it's absolutely brilliant Japanese origins, which we can't get enough of. See? You 'can' enjoy both sides, just in a different way. 

 We definitely recommend watching Death Note if you are a fan of 'dark fantasy' as much as we are. Ryuk will keep you deeply enthralled all the way through the spooky, dark night.

2012 - Directed by Stephen Marro

Broadway's Finest is one of the most original films you won't want to miss out on! It is rare these days to find such a unique plotline as; Three struggling New York City playwrights decide to impersonate real-life undercover cops just to come up with ideas for their new play. Refreshing and new! This action comedy is one of those buried treasures that you discover one late night and celebrate after watching because you just witnessed something really cool and unexpected. The cast is fun and the writing is clever. Adam Storke plays his role as Lewis, the former drug abuser, with charm, wit and raw intensity. His performance is one to watch out for.
The bottom line is that Broadway's Finest is a cool movie that will keep you guessing all the way through.

2014 - Directed by Dan Gilroy

Nightcrawler is a sharp, eye catching, darkly humorous film that finally finds Jake Gyllenhaal in his perfect element. Gyllenhaal plays Lou Bloom, an amoral opportunist, who stumbles upon his horrible calling of being a top notch 'nightcrawler'. Lou is someone who seems to take pleasure in his work, filming the injuries and deaths of unfortunate people, for the sake of money, as well as achieving his inflated dreams of an unrealistic, high powered status in the business world.

Gyllenhaal was reported to have lost 20 pounds for the role, creating such a gaunt and creepy look for himself that it makes you never want to take your eyes off of him! Lou Bloom is a brilliant sociopath who you love to hate, making Jake Gyllenhaal's performance in this film undoubtedly Oscar worthy! 

So, if you haven't seen this movie already, don't pass the chance up again. This grotesquely fascinating work of art will definitely leave you with a lasting impression.

1993 - Directed by Tony Scott

Stealing, cheating, killing. Who said romance was dead?

Clarence Worley marries hooker Alabama, steals cocaine from her pimp, and tries to sell it in Hollywood, while the owners of the coke try to reclaim it. Sounds like a pretty simple plot, right? Well, this film is as far from 'simple' as you can get! "True Romance" is a classic story full of love, deception, revenge, hate, and greed, all mixed together to make one of the most entertaining films of it's time! This wild ride of a movie has it's explosive, over-the-top scenes that can get ultra-violent, but it also manages to keep things hip, sentimental, and heroic. 
Christan Slater and Patricia Arquette play the 'Bonnie & Clyde' newlyweds to perfection. Not to mention some of the most unforgettable cameos you will ever see! Screen greats such as Val Kilmer, Dennis Hopper, Brad Pitt, Christopher Walken and James Gandolfini, just to name a few - but no one will ever stand out as much as Gary Oldman's portrayal of Drexl Spivey, the crazy-ass white pimp who thinks he's just one of the brothers! If for no other reason, see this movie for Gary Oldman. You will be glad you did!
